MoodleBox credentials

This page lists all the credentials (usernames and passwords) used in the MoodleBox. Of course the credentials are different if you have changed something.

Wi-Fi access

This password should be used to connect to the Wi-Fi network of the MoodleBox. The network name (SSID) is MoodleBox.

  • Password: moodlebox

Moodle access

These credentials should be used to log into the Moodle default administrator account.

  • Username: moodlebox
  • Password: Moodlebox4$

Command line access (Unix account, SSH, SFTP)

These credentials should be used for the Unix account. Use these credentials to access the MoodleBox via SSH or via SFTP.

MoodleBox installation

Proceed as follows to use the MoodleBox for the first time.

Step 1: Buy the hardware

The hardware you need for your MoodleBox is essentially a Raspberry Pi (3A+, 3B, 3B+, 4B, 400 or 5), a good power supply and a high-quality microSD card. In addition, a case is recommended to protect the board.

Step 2: Copy the disk image on the microSD card

For this task we recommend that you use the Raspberry Pi Imager utility, which will automatically download the MoodleBox disk image for you. Please also apply the recommended settings when copying the image.

Update MoodleBox Wi-Fi network configuration

When the MoodleBox is turned on, it works as a wireless access point. An administrator or manager may change several settings of the access point Wi-Fi settings of the MoodleBox. To do this, visit the MoodleBox dashboard at Site administration > Server > MoodleBox in the administration interface.

Change Wi-Fi network name (SSID)

You may change the network name (SSID). Type in a new SSID in the adequate field and click the button Change Wi-Fi settings. It is possible to enter SSIDs with specials characters such as emojis, including spaces.

You may make your own MoodleBox disk image and configure it to your own needs.

Source code allowing to make a MoodleBox disk image is provided at GitHub under AGPL v3.0 license. Documentation is available under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence.

Access MoodleBox command line interface

As a normal user, you should not need to connect into the command line interface of the MoodleBox. Anyway, you may access it if necessary via SSH, to get shell access, using the address moodlebox.home, using its default credentials:

  • username: moodlebox
  • password: Moodlebox4$

With PuTTY (under Windows)

Open a new connection, type the address moodlebox.home under Host Name, then click Open. Input the password Moodlebox4$.
